Vital culture (from Lat. vita, vitalis — life) is a part of material and spiritual culture associated with life support and everyday life of people. The concept of vital space is closely related to this notion, which means a material environment subordinate to a person, adapted for everyday life, an infrastructure to satisfy the physical and spiritual needs of individuals and social groups, depending on the level of society development. The vital culture of Polotsk population was studied on the basis of historical source analysis — on the basis of documents of the Polotsk magistrate of the 17th – 18th centuries, the revision of Polotsk in 1765 and new photographic documents of the 1920–50s. These sources made it possible to reveal in a new way many aspects of the history of Polotsk in the 17th – 18th centuries. The book is intended for a wide range of readers interested in the history of this Belarusian city in the early modern era.
