The monograph considers the development of continuous verb forms in the English grammatical system during the New English period, that is, over more than three centuries. The author  determines the syntactic conditions for the use of continuous forms in the New English period; identifies lexico-semantic groups of verbs in the continuous form and their dynamics; reveals pragmatic functions of continuous forms in literary texts of the New English period. The work determines the status of continuous forms in the grammatical system of modern English. The monograph is based on the dissertation research “Pragmatics of Continuous Forms in the Diachronic Aspect (based on the texts of English fiction of the 17th–20th centuries).” The publication is intended for specialists in the field of German studies, history of the English language, pragmalinguistics, as well as for a wide range of readers interested in problems of English grammar.
