The monograph is an independent study which contains the results obtained on the basis of the author's analysis. The basis of the work is documentary sources stored in the Zonal State Archives of Polotsk, the National Polotsk Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve, the National Archives of the Republic of Belarus, the Belarusian State Archive of Scientific and Technical Documentation, the Belarusian State Archive of Cinema and Photo Documents, the State Archive of Vitebsk Region. Most of the archival sources are first introduced into scientific circulation. The study is based on a range of sources and comprehensive analysis of the national and foreign historiography; wherein the process of socio-economic development of Polotsk in 1917–1991 is investigated, its features, factors of influence, patterns and results are revealed, a phased change in urban environment is shown.
It can be used for preparation of special and generalizing works on the history of Belarus, textbooks and teaching aids for higher and secondary educational institutions, creation of special courses on the history of the cities of Belarus, organization of museum and regional studies, in the field of tourism, including the activities of the National Polotsk Historical Cultural Museum-Reserve.
